Background of the study
Social media platforms such as TikTok have dramatically influenced phonetic articulation among Nigerian users. TikTok audio trends, characterized by lip sync performances and creative voiceovers, lead to modifications in pronunciation, intonation, and stress patterns. Nigerian users often adopt innovative vocal techniques to enhance content appeal and express cultural identity (Akinyemi, 2023). These digital practices contribute to notable phonetic variation, diverging from conventional speech norms. Comparative analysis reveals that TikTok’s short-form, visually driven format fosters rapid experimentation with speech sounds, thereby altering traditional phonetic features (Ibrahim, 2024). This study examines how TikTok audio trends impact phonetic articulation, comparing digital speech patterns with traditional pronunciation models. The findings will provide insights into the factors driving these changes, such as peer imitation, cultural influence, and platform constraints, thereby contributing to the development of new models in digital phonetics (Obi, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Despite TikTok’s popularity, there is limited research on its influence on Nigerian phonetic articulation. Existing studies tend to focus on visual content, neglecting the auditory dimension of digital communication. This gap hinders our understanding of how innovative vocal techniques on TikTok reshape pronunciation and accent patterns, challenging traditional phonetic models (Chinwe, 2023).
Objectives of the study
• To analyze phonetic variations in Nigerian TikTok audio content.
• To compare these variations with traditional speech.
• To develop theoretical models of digital phonetic change.
Research questions
• What phonetic modifications are observable in TikTok audio trends?
• How do these modifications differ from conventional pronunciation?
• What factors contribute to digital phonetic variation?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it examines the impact of TikTok on Nigerian phonetic articulation, advancing digital phonetics theory and guiding language education practices. Insights will help adapt teaching strategies to contemporary digital speech patterns (Akinyemi, 2023; Obi, 2025).
Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to TikTok audio content from Nigerian users, excluding other digital media and offline speech.
